There are many ways to learn to ride and train horses. Out there in the big wide world of horses is something for everyone. Which for the consumer means choices. When everyone is an expert, how are you to discern what methods are suitable or who are the best teachers? I attest that most options are good, or at least equal, in that they have a path from A to B. However, let me challenge you to consider what “B” is.
Describe for me the type of rider you want to be. The programs or teachers you consider should be able to tell you how they can help you work toward becoming that rider. Pay attention to their answers. Do they have a philosophy of teaching? Can they describe how you will progress through their program? If you want yourself or your child to become confident horse owners someday, can this program teach you how to become a confident horse owner? How do they do that? Are they proffering something you can believe in? Mis-matches in the A to B methodology are disappointing. How frustrating to be many months into something to realize it's not what you thought, or worse, you have no idea that it won't help you get to B because you never considered what B was. Even if you come to me and say I don't know my goal; I want to be around horses, I can describe to you exactly what my philosophy is and how I would go about you “being around horses.” If you want to be around horses, you must know something about them. I have been learning about horses for almost 40 years, have a Bachelor of Science degree in Equine Science, and regularly pursue professional development as a lifelong learner. I have the patience for timid riders and pathways for bold riders to advance. I believe horsemanship is paramount to being around horses, and I will help you learn how to handle, care for, and understand them. Save yourself from the tyranny of choice by asking how any particular program or teacher envisions the journey to B. Ask me!
